Ed has specialised in using participatory facilitation processes to quantify, qualify and develop better understanding of the socio-economic risks facing investments by governments, corporations and communities. This leads to improved project design and performance and an increased likelihood of beneficiary participation and project and institutional sustainability. There is a focus on the integration of interests of different stakeholder groups, social, environmental and economic factors.

Ed has worked on projects funded by a range of AID agencies, financiers and multinational private sector companies. Examples include, World Bank, IFC, FAO, ADB, DFAT (Australia), GTZ, IFAD, Commonwealth Secretariat, Barclays Capital, BP, Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton,, Xstrata and Olam.

Selected Project Experience:


Preparation of Community Development Strategy and 5 Year Plan for PT Freeport Indonesia in Papua Province.


Preparation of Community Development Management Plan for Rubber Plantation Project funded through the Vietnam Investments Group and to meet IFC performance standards.


Services to finalise Community Development Management Plan for BHP Billiton’s Indo Met Coal Project Haju mine site in Kalimantan and to draft a concept paper for the Barito River Community Program, aimed at around 153 villages along the Barito River Barge route.


Contributed to an assessment of BP’s approach to human rights policy and practice against human rights guidance provided by IPIECA - the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues.

Papua New Guinea

Principal in Charge of team to conduct mid-term independent review of Exxon Mobil’s Community Development Support Program for the PNG LNG Project.

Guinea (Conakry)

Technical Reviewer for URS resettlement services to the Rio Tinto Simandou Project. Services included socio-economic survey assessment of affected people, the preparation and implementation of Resettlement Action Plans including compensation and livelihood restoration, stakeholder and community relations and project management services.


Peer reviewer of the Social Impact Assessment, including resettlement, stakeholder engagement and human rights for the Tampakan Mining Project on Mindanao Island against IFC standards.


Principal In Charge of Human Rights Impact Assessment for the BHP Billiton IndoMet Coal Project in Central and East Kalimantan using the IFC/Global Compact/International Business Leaders Forum Guide to Human Rights Assessment and Management. Provided human rights training for project staff, managers and trainers.

Papua New Guinea

Project Sponsor / Director for Resettlement Implementation Assistance to the ExxonMobil PNG LNG Project.


Social Analyst – Phulbari Coal Project - to review project social and economic impacts assessment against IFC Equator Principles and safeguards for Barclays Capital, the financiers of the project. The Project involves the relocation of 40,00 people.

Solomon Islands

Due Diligence of the social components of the Gold Ridge Mine Feasibility Study for the Commonwealth Secretariat, as advisers to the Government of the Solomon Islands.


Peer Reviewer of Social Impact Assessment component of the Santos Gladstone LNG Project in Northern Queensland.

Sri Lanka

Public consultation and social impact due diligence for Development of Primary and Rural Roads Projects funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation.


Quality Assurance of Community Development Toolkit prepared for the World Bank/ and ICMM - International Council on Mining and Metals.


Project Director and Curriculum Development Adviser for the Consulting Services for the Proposed Pakistan Institute of Ginning under the Asian Development Bank assisted Cotton Development Project.

Solomon Islands

Project Director and Monitoring and Evaluation Adviser for the Australian Commonwealth DFAT funded Solomon Islands Institutional Strengthen of Land Administration Project II (2000-2007).


Institutional Strengthening/Adult Learning Adviser for the Australian Commonwealth DFAT funded Vietnam Australia Monitoring & Evaluation Strengthening Project (VAMESP) – established a competency based training system and prepared capacity profiles at National ODA agency, Provincial and Project Management Unit levels for the national ODA M&E system.
